Why is my domain name locked?

Jun 11, 2013 by DinoGuy
Hi all..
I just found out that my domain name is locked. Why is my domain name locked? And do I need to unlock it? Everything seems to work fine though. My site is running, and I have no issues. I am just curious. Is this a default thing?

Some hosting companies automatically lock the domain when a user registers a new domain name or an existing domain name. Domain name locking is done to prevent a user from changing the server’s name and also prevents other registrars from contacting you.

You would only need to unlock your domain name if you need to change the name servers of your domain name. Or if you are hosting DNS for your hosting account yourself, and you want to change the name servers. You can simply contact your hosting provider to unlock your domain name temporarily, make your edits and then lock it back.
