SHH Directory permission

asked Nov 28, 2013 in Security by GeekNew (720 points)
Good morning all
I have a directory with folders, subfolders and files. I want to add permissions to this full directory(with all its folders, subfolders and files). I want to do this using SHH. I tried this
chmod -R 775 /home/user/public_html/mydirectory
But it didn’t work because I tried transferring files to the directory using FTP but I wasn’t able to due to permission issues. This is the error message I get " 553 you donot have permission to upload"

Can anyone please help?

The default 755 permissions should work and you don’t need to add the 755. This might be a problem with the files ownership. Try updating the correct ownership for all the folders and files and folder and then try uploading the files.

If you have suhosin, try changing the permissions of your folder to 750.
