Set up and enable SSL on Joomla 3

Mar 17, 2013 by jomnew
I have an SSL certificate that is already set up on my host but I just can’t make it to work with my Joomla 3 new install. I have tried adding this line to my configuration.php file:

var $live_site = 'https://www.mydomain.com';

I also changed  the root .htaccess  and made it end with this code:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} OFF
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}
And all I got was a blank page or a server error, so I set the SSL requirement  to 0 in the configuration.php file.
I am not sure what am I doing wrong. Can anyone please help?

Undo all that you did (editing those files) and simply go to your Joomla site using an admin user and go to Global configuration->server tab ->force SSL option and set this option to  the entire website, then save and close.
